The Libya Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS) Bylaws establish operational principles and identify the governance structure of the Institute. LIAS’ Bylaws promote a system of shared governance across the institution and establish the following structures to be involved in decision-making.
Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is the governing authority of LIAS. The Board manages policies and strategic plans and is informed by a number of standing committees.
Faculty Advisory Boards
Advisory Boards for each faculty and affiliated center protect, promote, and enhance the excellence of core academic activities. Through a system of mutual authority and responsibility which recognizes the central role each LIAS faculty and center plays in enhancing LIAS’s intellectual profile as well as the quality and value of the education it provides, several advisory board members are also Board members.
The Chancellor is appointed by the Board of Directors. The Chancellor is the principal executive officer of LIAS and is responsible for supervising educational and administrative affairs.
Approved by the Board of Directors, the Chancellor’s leadership team – which includes senior officials from each of LIAS’s faculties and centers – provides advice on matters of strategic and operational significance. General Managers are the highest ranking executive officers in each of LIAS’s faculties and centers and are responsible for the resources allocated and educational and administrative operations.
Cross-departmental committees exist to consider issues ranging from academic freedom to institutional policies. Faculty members are appointed to committees by the Chancellor or Vice Chancellors.
